Carol ---- Try using a pliers and pull straight up from the floor. If wood is too hard, grip with pliers and pry out using a fulcrum such as a pencil or other object approximately 1/2" thick. If you are unable to grip the staple use the corner of a thin putty knife and a hammer to loosen it up until you can grip it with the pliers.
