Dry Rot?

Posted By: Molly

I just moved and upon unpacking I discovered what looks like some type of fungus (dry rot?... a black, red, white, yellow growth) on a couple of my unfinished but stained pine cabinets. For the last twenty years these six cabinets stood in my library, a room with no moisture (I live in the desert), very little light and no ventilation. There are a total of three spots (two on one cabinet and one on another) each about 6 inches square. I read somewhere that I should throw away the pieces with the fungus but what about the other four? Should I be concerned about this fungus appearing on them even though they look okay so far? I read that the spores can travel. If I do keep them is there something I could do at this stage to protect them? In my new home they will be in an open, well lit, well ventilated room. Thank you in advance.
