Bricklaying over an old house on piers

My husband and I are seriously considering bricking the exterior of our house. The original house is about 50 years old and is on piers (about 1100 sq ft). The previous owners added about another 900 sq. ft. of living room and another bedroom that is all on a slab. All of the existing exterior (new and old part of house) is wood. We plan to lay a brick ledge around the old part of the house 18" high and 12" wide. We're nervous and need to know if we should even be considering bricking over the old part of the house that is on piers -- could it settle in future years and totally mess everything up or do we just need to be sure we hire a reputable contractor to do the job and hope for the best?
