You are correct in thinking you may have more problems if you try to fix the leak at that connection. I had a similar problem where 2 very experienced repairmen spent about 5 hours on one radiator. One quick fix may be a very high quality epoxy. However I would think that any fix like this would leak again with time.

You may want to try calling several repair shops with experience in older home radiators. They may be able to get you the parts or guarantee you an up front price on each radiator. This way if the job takes several hours for each radiator you are not left with a repair bill many times more than you expected.
