In Response To: Flourescent Lights (Ernie)

First replace the light bulbs. If this does not help you most likely have a problem with your ballast. You should be able to find replacements at your local home center or hardware store.

Before purchasing a new ballast you want to find the ballast on the light. The house current is wired directly into this part of the light. The ballast looks like a transformer with wires running into it. Often it is covered by a shield that can be removed after the light bulbs are removed. You want to either disconnect the entire ballast or get all the information off the unit to take with you to the store. Remember always turn off the power at the circuit breaker not just the switch. Replacing a ballast is somewhat tricky if you have never done it before. Looking at a similar fixture in a store and looking at the directions for installation would probably help. Also, depending on the quality of the light you may be better off replacing the entire fixture. Ballasts can be somewhat expensive. Good luck. Hopefully someone else here can be more help.
