Dave ------ If the texturing has been done with drywall compound, and not painted, a dampened sponge might wear down the high spots enough to provide a flat surface for painting. If the texturing is of the popcorn type a scraper of some kind might remove the roughness. Not an easy job in any case. Good luck, Roger

PS If worse comes to worse, you could always resort to the option discussed in Post #1494
