A Handyman Helping Hand

central air conditioning

How do I determine the correct size for a central air conditioning unit? I have received quotes from 4 different contractors and have received recommendations of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 ton units. I live in a 2,000 square foot, 8 room ranch style split level in Connecticut. I would like to do the calculation myself as a double check. Is there a web site or book that you could recommend with the calculation formula. Everything I read says that in a humid area like Connecticut, too much tonnage is just as bad as too little.

I would appreciate any help. Thank you
