The best long term treatement for doug fir is staining or painting with an oil based product. All sides and toungues and grooves should be painted prior to installation. You can start with a thinned base coat to allow absorbtion into the wood then apply successive coats.

No need to caulk joints. Thompson's water seal is a waste of money.
