A Handyman Helping Hand

circular saw operation

I am remodeling, and bought a new Skilsaw. I put in a blade for cutting smooth cuts, for doing the baseboards. The saw has a clutch that, when binding occurs, the blade will slip to avoid kickback. The problem Im having is that the blade burns the wood, and when I get to the end of the cut, the wood splinters. I know the blade depth has to do with splintering, but am I using the wrong blade? It is a 40 tooth blade, and the saw came with a 20 tooth blade.
