In Response To: PAINTED COUNTERTOPS......Tell me how (Jayne)

Jayne ------- This response assumes your countertops are made of high pressure plastic laminate (brand names such as Formica, Wilsonart etc.) This is a very durable material, designed so things will not stick to the surface. Unfortunately, this also includes paint. Then, assuming you were able to successfully paint the surface, you will have replaced a very durable surface with a surface that is not very durable.

Have you looked at replacing the countertops? Some of the home centers have made-up sections of countertops, in a variety of colors, that can be installed with a few tools by someone who is somewhat handy. I believe the home centers can also order custom made sizes of countertops. Or, you can call your local countertop fabrication shop, and they will make the units and install them.

If you decide to paint your existing tops, make sure you sand them THOROUGHLY with #100 or 150 sandpaper and then apply a very good oil-based primer, followed by an equivalent oil-based enamel. Consult with a good paint store regarding the paints, primers and brushes.

Good luck, Roger
