In Response To: Entry Doors (Rodney)

Rodney --------

Several questions come to mind regarding a new door.

- Is your old door a standard size so you will have a large selection of new doors to consider?

- Are you going to paint or stain/varnish the new door? If you are going to paint, wood or fiberglass will work.

- How long are you going to live at your residence? Do you want to pay for a 50 year door if you are only going to live there for 5 years.

- If you are going to stain the door, a nice wood (oak, mahogany, nice grained fir, even cherry) would work. How much do you want to spend?

- What is the condition of the jamb, and the trim (inside and out), that attaches the jamb to the opening?

- How handy are you with a power saw or plane (to trim the new door), and with a hammer and chisel to install the hinges and lock?

- Does your existing door have some kind of weather stripping on the bottom that ties in with the existing threshold?

- Can you find a prehung unit, that looks nice and meets your needs? Make sure the trim on the prehung will fit where the existing trim is now!

- Re: fiberglass, are you willing to paint or varnish a wood door every 3-5 years?

- Do you have a direct sun problem that would affect a wood door?

Good Luck,

Roger
