wood slivers on my deck

I keep getting wood slivers in my feet from our wood deck. the wood is still structurally sound with maybe 5 yrs of life left. I want to coat/paint the deck with a material that will fill the small wood cracks within the boards and cover over the slivers. my friend suggested good latex paint. I was wondering if this would be thick enough. I imagined some type of new rubbery paint-on material, but am not aware of any. any suggestions?? Thanks!
