Sewage Pipe

I recently began to have sewage run into the pipe that feeds my sump pump. The sewer pipe from my home runs over the pipe that leads to the sump pump. The sewer pipe that runs to the street is clay, the first 5 feet is cast iron. Some of the joints became loose and rathter than dig up the entire pipe and put a new one, the contractor suggested that we re-line the pipe with PVC. Its 4 inch clay and they wanted to use 3 inch PVC. Is this good?????? What could be some of the problems that occur?
