Pilot won't light on gas hot water heater

Dear Handyman, I recently ran out of gas(I have a propane tank)and thus my hot water heater went out. After I got gas I tried to relight the pilot light and it lit. However, I forgot to set the knob to "on" and instead left it on "pilot". The pilot light went out and I never got any hot water. I went back to investigate and discovered what I had previously done and tried to relight the pilot light. This time I could not even get the pilot to light. My hot water heater is only 4 years old. I have never had this problem before and I know I have gas. It seems that maybe the gas is not getting to the pilot light to ignite it. Do you have any suggestions?
