Enlarging an interior door opening

I found such a deal (you know how that goes!) on a set of older french doors. I wanted to use them in the opening between our foyer and living room. Found them at an antique store which was going out of business, so didn't have time to go home and measure. After I got home with them, I found they will fit perfectly between our LR and DR (but I don't really want them there), so if I can't enlarge other opening easily and cheaply, then I could use them there, so all is not lost, but I really want to put them in the foyer.

Can we cut the opening larger without worry of the house falling down and how do you do this? I am somewhat handy but haven't had a lot of experience. Is this something which would be too hard for a novice to undertake? It is so hard to find a handyman to do small jobs like this. Got any suggestions on how to find one who specializes in small jobs and how much should a job like this cost?
