Ypu refer to green board as the tile backing for your shower stall; If you use the 1/2 inch hardboard that is designed for bathroom wall tile, then you won't have to worry about the water ruining the board as it is completely waterproof.

If you cut (or score and break) to the exact size leaving an 1/8 inch for vinyl caulking then you will have a much easier job than messing with drywall or even wonderboard. The instructions come with the brand name hardbacker which is what I am referring to. It is about $10 per 3x5 sheet.
